6 Reasons Why Diesel Generator Sets Burn Oil

Oct. 10, 2024

Diesel generator set "burning oil" refers to the lubricating oil in the lubrication system of the unit entering the cylinder and participating in combustion. Burning oil not only increases the fuel consumption of the unit, but also leads to insufficient combustion of the engine oil. Over time, it can cause a large amount of carbon deposits, affecting the power performance of the unit. Therefore, when we find that diesel generator sets are burning oil, we must deal with it in a timely manner. Below, Top Power will introduce the 6 reasons why diesel generator sets are burning oil.

1. Too much oil in the oil pan

Some users have inserted the dipstick incorrectly and failed to seat it to the bottom, resulting in the measured oil level being lower than the actual oil level. Therefore, they need to add new oil, causing the oil level to be too high. If the bottom end of the connecting rod of the high-pressure lubricated engine touches the oil surface, or if the oil ring of the splashing lubricated engine is immersed too deeply in the oil pool, it will cause excessive oil to be thrown to the cylinder wall and enter the combustion chamber.

2. The size of the piston ring provided is not suitable

If an improperly sized piston ring is selected, it is highly likely to cause oil leakage. Different types of engines and working conditions require various specially designed and manufactured piston ring assemblies. Each type of piston ring assembly is designed for a specific purpose, and if used in the wrong place, the engine's oil consumption cannot be controlled.

3. Using unclean engine oil

Not changing the oil according to the oil change cycle and improper maintenance of the oil filter can make the oil dirty, causing the oil to clog the piston and piston ring, resulting in increased fuel consumption. Unclean oil can also cause increased wear on bearings, cylinders, pistons, and piston rings.

4. Wear or breakage of piston rings

If the piston ring breaks or wears excessively, causing stress and clearance that cannot be maintained, excess oil will be sucked into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke, and the combustion gas will flow down the piston during the power stroke. Both of them can cause combustion and carbonization of the oil at the piston, cylinder wall, and piston ring.

5. Excessive oil pressure

Incorrect oil pressure setting of diesel generator sets can cause excessive oil pressure, resulting in the engine being soaked with excessive oil and producing results similar to bearing wear.

6. The piston ring is stuck

After the piston ring gets stuck, it burns engine oil. When the piston ring gets stuck in the ring groove, it loses elasticity and the seal deteriorates. Not only does it bring a large amount of engine oil into the combustion chamber when the piston is moving upwards, but it also injects a large amount of high-pressure gas into the crankcase when the piston is doing work, causing the pressure inside the crankcase to increase. The splashing engine oil enters the intake duct through the crankcase ventilation device, and the engine oil and air enter the combustion chamber together for combustion. When severe air leakage is detected in the crankcase ventilation system, often caused by piston ring jamming, it should be immediately eliminated.

The above are several reasons why diesel generator sets burn engine oil. When a small amount of engine oil is burned in a diesel engine, the power will not decrease, but this is an early phenomenon of diesel engine wear and tear, which must be given sufficient attention and corresponding measures taken. Otherwise, when it develops to the point where a large amount of engine oil is burned before treatment, most can only undergo major repairs, causing unnecessary economic losses to users.
