Analysis of the Causes of Diesel Explosion

Oct. 10, 2024

Diesel is the main fuel for diesel generator sets. Due to its low ignition point, the ignition form of diesel engines is compression ignition, which not only does not have an ignition system, but the structure of the fuel supply system is also very simple, making it more reliable than many gasoline engines. Therefore, it is widely used in various industries as an emergency backup power source. However, diesel is also an extremely flammable and explosive substance. Therefore, diesel generator set users must know the following knowledge about diesel!

1. Under what circumstances will diesel explode?

When the concentration of diesel vapor reaches the explosive limit (concentration of 0.6% -8.0%), it will explode if exposed to open flames or static electricity, which is related to the air pressure, temperature, and atmospheric humidity at that time. Dingbo Electric recommends that the fuel tank should not be filled too full. Oil tank overflow is a very dangerous thing, and once it encounters an open flame, it will cause spontaneous combustion.

2. At what temperature will diesel explode?

Diesel is a combustible material, and its vapor will burn and explode when exposed to an open flame at 60 ° C. When storing and using diesel generator sets, users should pay attention to fire and explosion prevention. Fire and explosion accidents caused by diesel often occur, and diesel has a certain toxic effect on the human body. To avoid accidents, users of diesel generator sets must take "four precautions" when storing and using diesel in the machine room: preventing deterioration, fire and explosion, poisoning, and static electricity.

3. What is the self ignition point of diesel?

The self ignition point refers to the lowest temperature at which a combustible substance spontaneously ignites under specified conditions. The self ignition point also varies at different atmospheric pressures, with lower pressures generally leading to higher self ignition points. At normal atmospheric pressure, the ignition point of diesel is 220 ℃.

4. What are the fire extinguishing measures?

Diesel fuel caught fire and exploded, and a fire extinguisher can be used for rescue. Foam, dry powder and liquid carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are all OK. However, it is important to pay attention to the position of the spray. The best place for the fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire is at the bottom of the flame. However, since it is a liquid fire, spraying at the oil surface may cause the oil to splash with the flame and expand the fire. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at the lower part of the flame but not spray onto the diesel liquid surface.

The effectiveness of using fire extinguishers for diesel fires in containers is not very good. After preparing all the fire extinguishers on site, it is best for one person to rescue the other and quickly prepare a cover to prevent the fire from getting out of control after the extinguishers are used up.

Attention: Do not use water to extinguish diesel fires. Use suffocation method, dry powder fire extinguisher, and carbon dioxide fire extinguisher.

5. How to store diesel correctly?

Before storing fuel, the fuel tank should be cleaned and free of water, residual oil, rust, impurities, etc. If diesel is used with water or impurities, it may seriously damage the fuel pump and injector. Diesel should be fully precipitated and filtered before use to eliminate impurities, and generally should not be less than 48 hours.

For safety reasons, diesel should be stored in a sealed environment with reduced contact with air; Secondly, reduce unnecessary back and forth flipping between different storage containers to minimize evaporation and oxidation; The third is to reduce the space for air and try to fill up as much oil as possible with barrels. Due to the contact between diesel and air, coupled with high temperature, some components in diesel will be oxidized, resulting in an increase in acid value, gum, and residual carbon.
