Application and Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets Air Filter Part 1

Mar. 23, 2022

Today, we will briefly introduce the appropriate application and maintenance methods of diesel generator set air filters.

The diesel generator set needs to suck in a lot of air during the working process. If the air is not filtered, the dust suspended in the air is sucked into the cylinder, which will accelerate the wear of the piston group and the cylinder. Larger particles entering between the piston and the cylinder will cause serious "pulling the cylinder", which is especially serious in dry and sandy working environments.

Damaged air filter: Diesel engines are more difficult to start than gasoline engines, especially in winter. In order to facilitate the starting of the diesel engine, some users drill a 10mm hole on the shell of the air filter, and use this small hole to start the ignition, although the problem of difficult starting is solved to a certain extent. As everyone knows, this hole directly destroys the vacuum degree of the air filter and reduces the effect of air filtration. A part of the air directly enters the cylinder without being filtered, so that the air entering the cylinder contains a lot of dust. These dust particles have a strong abrasion effect on the surface of the cylinder liner, piston and piston ring, which accelerates the wear of these components. At the same time, the dust entering the cylinder is brought into the oil pan by the oil, and by being pumped to the moving surfaces, the wear of the relative moving parts is accelerated, resulting in the rough operation of the diesel engine, the reduction of power, the increase of fuel consumption, and the shortening of the service life of the machine.

Air filter that has not been cleaned for a long time: the oil pan of the central suction pipe is not cleaned for a long time, and new oil is not added, resulting in excessive dust and oil scale, and the oil thickens into a paste, losing its filtering effect. Centrifugal dust collector cap, deflector and dust hood are not cleaned for a long time, too much soil will increase intake resistance, reduce intake eddy current speed and dust removal effect, accelerate the wear of parts, and reduce diesel engine power.

"Oil-eating" air filter: the oil in the oil pan of some air filters will soon be gone. This phenomenon is caused because the resistance of the air filter is too large, and the oil is sucked into the air intake. The intake air enters the cylinder to be burned. At this point, check whether the filter element is blocked or deformed.

The air filter is not firm: some air filters are not tightly connected with the intake pipe, and the fixing is not firm. When the diesel engine is running, it shakes, causing the air filter to be unsealed and ineffective.

Incomplete air filter: the filter screen of some air filters falls off into holes and missing pieces, and the gap between the filter screen and the outer casing is too large, which almost loses the effect of air filtration. The reason is that the quality of the mesh disk is poor, excessive fatigue after long-term use, machine vibration, etc., and the metal filter should be replaced in time.
