Cummins Diesel Generator Set Shall Not be Preheated or Cooled

Some problems of Cummins diesel generator set during operation are caused by the lack of in-depth and comprehensive understanding of Cummins diesel generator set by operators. This lack of basic knowledge has led to some incorrect usage and operation methods in actual production. Starlight reminds users to prevent Cummins diesel generator set from not preheating when starting and cooling when shutdown.  

It is a common wrong operation not to preheat, and Cummins diesel generator set should not enter into high speed or load operation immediately after starting. Especially in cold seasons, it is more important to note that Cummins diesel generator set needs to run for 3-5 minutes at idle speed of 800-1000 rpm or at low speed without load, and then can run with load. If Cummins diesel generator set starts and works with load, the temperature of Cummins diesel generator set is low at this time, and the clearance of each part is relatively small. At the same time, after a long time of shutdown, a large amount of lubricant on each friction surface has been lost, and the oil film has been severely damaged. At this time, the Cummins diesel generator set suddenly runs at high speed, and the lubricant cannot be delivered to the friction surfaces in time, which has increased the wear of the parts to a certain extent, and may lead to abnormal damage of the Cummins diesel generating set.

For this reason, relevant regulations point out that Cummins diesel generator set shall be started for no-load test run once a week, and the operation time shall not be less than 5 minutes. Before boiler ignition, Cummins diesel generator set shall be started and operated once with load, 250 kW with load, and the operation time shall not be less than 90 minutes. When the ambient temperature is lower than 5 ℃, the Cummins diesel generator set heater needs to be started.  

Not cooling down before shutdown is a serious mistake. The operator often shuts down Cummins diesel generator set immediately after completing the test or the load task of Cummins diesel generator set. Cummins diesel generator set cannot work with load immediately after starting, nor can it stop immediately after working with load. This is particularly noteworthy in high-temperature environments. When the Cummins diesel generator set is shut down after working with load, it should be kept at 800~1000 rpm idle speed or low speed for 3~5 minutes after unloading the load, and can be shut down only after the temperature of Cummins diesel generator set decreases. Otherwise, due to the regenerative effect of combustion temperature inside the cylinder, faults such as "cylinder pulling" may occur.
