How to Determine The Power Capacity of Diesel Generator?

Apr. 30, 2024

Whether used for emergency backup or industrial main diesel generators, many customers believe that they should order equipment with much greater power than they actually need, which is understandable. Sometimes, their load calculations are incorrect, but more often than not, they believe that even with much higher costs, having a larger power would add some "safety".

Okay, maybe you're lucky enough to have endless money to spend, but going to extremes when determining the power output of the generator is still not a good idea. Usually, small gasoline engines can operate under any load, but today we will focus on diesel engines with a power output of over 10kW for discussion.

If you increase the power too much, your diesel engine will be damaged.

If you purchase or rent a generator with higher power, its diesel engine will come at a cost. Diesel generators like to work hard, and if allowed, they actually last longer. The ideal operating temperature range for diesel engines is 170 degrees Fahrenheit to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the diesel engine driving the generator is under load, especially in colder climates, it will operate below the ideal engine temperature. You will find that within a few hundred hours, carbon or coal smoke has clumped into the exhaust gas. You may also see oil seeping out around various exhaust system components. Depending on the engine brand, oil consumption may also significantly and continuously deteriorate. Eventually, smoke and dust will start to "spray" out of the exhaust pipe, causing chaos, and the accumulation of oil will also reduce the available output of the engine.

If you find that the engine has severe carbon deposits and consumes a lot of oil, you need to connect the generator to the load group or find another way to increase the power load. The increase in diesel engine temperature will remove soot, slow down oil consumption, and restore your machine to its full performance.

A suggestion for you is not to park your convertible next to a generator with coal smoke accumulation when loading it. It is expected that black small coal smoke will fall everywhere. If the machine is severely blocked by coal smoke, place a fire extinguisher nearby. Sometimes, a small amount of soot soaked in oil will emerge from the burning exhaust pipe and burn for a period of time.

How to know if the power capacity of a diesel generator is too large?

This is understandable, as you would prefer to avoid attempting to buy a machine that is too large for your needs when purchasing or renting a generator with some margin of error. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that the generator is always loaded to at least 50% of its rated power.
