How to Switch Between Diesel Generator Set and Mains Power?

When mains power is failure, diesel generator will be as an important role in emergency power supply equipments. The article is mainly about how to switch between diesel generator set and mains power. 

If diesel generator set needs to automatically switch with mains power, then ATS cabinet (automatic transfer switch cabinet ) can be configured.

The basic functions of ATS are: in case of mains power failure, ATS will automatically switch the load to the power generation end after a delay of 0-10 seconds; in case of mains power recovery, ATS will automatically switch the load to the mains power end after a delay of 0-10 seconds, and the generator set will automatically stop after a cooling delay. The switching delay of ATS cabinet ensures the stability of various electrical parameters of unit power supply or mains power supply before switching.

ATS has the function of mains power priority, that is to say, even in the power supply state of the generator set, whenever the mains power returns to normal, it will immediately switch to the mains power supply. ATS can detect the municipal power failure signal, when the municipal power failure, it can timely give a control signal to the self starting end of the generator set, so that the unit can self start and prepare for power supply.

Of course, if there is power distribution cabinet in your machine room, we also do not need to use ATS cabinet. But it needs to operate by manual. Now we shares methods to switch generator set to mains power and mains power to generator set by using power distribution cabinet.

The steps of switching generator set power to mains power

Firstly, turn off all the breakers.

Turn off the low voltage breaker in the low voltage switch box one by one. After that, turn off the smart & automatic breaker in the low voltage switch box. Sliding the smart change-over switch to the manual position.

Secondly, turn off the smart switch of powered by generator.

Turn off the smart switch of mains power. The mains power will be separate with power sent by generator. Successfully switch from generator power to mains power.

Thirdly, turn on all breakers in the low voltage switch box.

Turn on the smart breaks in the low voltage switch box, when it is getting stable, then turn on the breaks for each production floor and canteen & warehouse one by one. The interval time between turn on each breaks should be at least 10s. The low voltage breaker in the low voltage for each unit starts to work.

Finally, shut down the generator.

Setting on the panel to let the generator stop to work at the set time automatically. The generator stop to work and the factory use the mains power.

The steps of switching mains power to generator set power 

Firstly, turn off all the breakers.

Turn off the low voltage breaker in the low voltage switch box one by one. After that, turn off the smart & automatic breaker in the low voltage switch box.

Secondly, turn off the smart switch of mains power.

Turn off the smart switch of mains power. The mains power will be separate with power sent by generator. Successfully switch from mains power to generator power.

Thirdly, start up the generator.

Start up the generator according to the generator operation procedure. Check if all the related parameter is in normal or not. The rotate speed should be 1500rpm. Water temperature is 70-75 degree. Voltage is 385V, the voltage of recharge is 26V. Note: the parameter details will depend on different requirements.

Fourthly, turn on all breakers in the low voltage switch box.

Turn on the smart breaks in the lo voltage switch box, when it is getting stable, then turn on the breaks for each production floor and canteen & warehouse one by one. The interval time between turn on each breaks should be at least 10s.

Finally, sliding the smart change-over switch to the manual position.

When various breaks starts to work, then sliding the smart change-over switch to the manual operation.
