Power Performance Indicators of Diesel Generators

Dec. 05, 2023

A diesel generator can be measured from different perspectives, and its power can be divided into two types: indicated power and effective power. The power we usually refer to is the effective power. The so-called indicated power refers to the mechanical energy converted from thermal energy per unit time, represented by the symbol N. It is an indicator of the internal working cycle of diesel engine cylinders and generally has little significance for diesel engine users. Effective power refers to the net power output of a diesel engine from the crankshaft, represented by the symbol N. Because diesel engines overcome the frictional resistance of internal components during operation, as well as drive some necessary auxiliary equipment (such as valve train, fuel injection pump, oil pump, water pump, etc.), which require a portion of power consumption. Therefore, it is impossible for all the indicated power it emits to be output outward from the crankshaft, so the effective power is always lower than the indicated power.

Effective power is an important indicator during the use of diesel engines. It represents the external power output and usage range of diesel engines. Due to the limitations in the structural strength of various components of a diesel engine, in order to maintain its sustainable and reliable operation, the effective power that the diesel engine can emit differs from the limited range of actual use. According to different purposes, the national standards have made the following provisions on the power consumption of diesel engines.

1. 15 minute power. The maximum effective power allowed for a diesel engine to operate continuously for 15 minutes. It is a power indicator specified to meet the mechanical requirements of good overload and acceleration performance in a short period of time, such as the diesel engine used in automobiles.

2. Lh power. The maximum effective power that allows the diesel engine to operate continuously for 1 hour. It is a power index specified to meet the need for a certain power reserve to adapt to the mechanical requirements of sudden load, such as the diesel engine used in internal combustion locomotives.

3. 12h power. The maximum effective power that allows the diesel engine to operate continuously for 12 hours. It is a power index specified to meet the mechanical requirements of continuous operation for 12 hours. Generally, 12h power is also known as rated power or rated power. The power of a certain diesel engine, such as a diesel engine used for oil drilling, often refers to this power.

4. Persistent power. The maximum effective power allowed for a diesel engine to operate continuously for a long time. It is a power indicator specified to meet the requirements of long-term continuous operation of machinery. The endurance power is generally 90% of the rated power, such as for diesel engines used in fixed generators. Due to the different uses of various diesel engines, there are often several different effective powers specified in the user manual. The specified power should be strictly followed during operation, otherwise it may cause diesel engine accidents or shorten the service life.
