As far as the generator is concerned, the role of a muffler in internal combustion engines is similar to that of engines used in automotive and building applications, which can reduce combustion noise and exhaust emissions.
There are three basic design schemes:
1. Sound-absorbing silencer
The internal structure is composed of fiberglass or insulating glass. After the exhaust passes through the insulation layer, its noise will be reduced. This method is used to reduce high-frequency sound waves.
Combination Silencer - Combining a reactive muffler with an absorption muffler, the absorption material is installed in the interior design of the reactive muffler, thereby reducing all frequency designs.
Reactive Silencer - The internal structure consists of three chambers connected by pipes. The exhaust noise rebounds between the exhaust chambers, reducing output noise to lower mid to low frequency noise.
2. Cylindrical muffler
The cylindrical muffler is one of the earliest developed shapes. They can be built into all three basic designs and can be used both internally and externally. Silencers can be installed horizontally or vertically according to various application requirements. It is said that this is one of the most economical silencers.
3. Thin muffler
This type of muffler can have various shapes such as rectangular, elliptical, and circular. The selected shape depends on available space. They often use generators in sound attenuation enclosures. Disinfection equipment must comply with the regulations of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
When the generator operates in a combustible environment, the exhaust system must be modified to ensure that sparks generated during the combustion process are not discharged into the atmosphere. The Mars brake silencer is usually cylindrical and adopts an improved reactor design. In this way, carbon sparks circulate inside the muffler and fall into the collection box. During the maintenance process, the collection box must be cleaned.
The exhaust pipe temperature is as high as 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. This gas is often discharged into the atmosphere. A hot air muffler is used to utilize the heat in exhaust gas before entering the atmosphere. This type of heat source can be applied to any system that requires an external heat source. 4. Exhaust control muffler
There are many types of combustible gases. Some gases are very harmful, while others are harmless. The National Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforces exhaust gas regulations to reduce harmful gas emissions.
The National Environmental Protection Administration strictly controls the emissions of generators that provide the main electricity. Current regulations require the use of catalytic converters. The basic converter is designed with a honeycomb grid and installed directly in the exhaust system behind the exhaust pipe. At this position, the exhaust gas can reach the maximum temperature required for normal operation. Many new types of silencers use a combination of converters and silencers.
The relevant regulations also involve the content of particulate matter in exhaust gas. The use of particulate filters can reduce the ash content of exhaust gas. The inner layer of the filter is made of ceramic material. The exhaust is collected through materials and smoke. Lean burn engines can also use additives to further reduce the emissions of harmful gases.
