The Reason Why Diesel Generator Coolant is Used Less and Less

The consumption of coolant in diesel generators is relatively high, and after parking, there are obvious traces of coolant dripping onto the ground. The main reasons for the decrease in coolant usage are as follows:

1. The radiator is leaking water. Long term use may cause radiator leakage due to rust or other reasons.


2. The gasket of the water pump is damaged or the sealing ring is twisted or deformed, or the screws are loose. Working for a long time causes the cylinder liner sealing ring to gradually wear out, resulting in loose sealing and water leakage. Twisting and deforming the sealing ring during installation can also cause water leakage.


3. Cracks occur in the cylinder head, cylinder liner, and engine body. Diesel generators that lack water or suddenly add cold water due to overheating can easily cause rapid contraction and rupture of the cylinder head and body due to the large temperature difference. After parking in winter, if the coolant is not discharged, the coolant in the radiator will freeze and cause the engine to rupture. The cylinder head nuts are not tightened according to the specified sequence (or tightening force), some are tight and some are loose, causing deformation of the cylinder head. In the case of overheating, cracks are prone to occur.


4. Rupture of rubber water pipes or loose clamps at water pipe joints are common causes of water leakage.


5. The sealing ring at the lower part of the cylinder liner is poorly sealed. Insufficient elasticity or hardening, poor assembly, rust, twisting and deformation of rubber sealing rings can all cause poor sealing and water leakage.


6. Cracking or detachment of the radiator's upper and lower chambers and core pipes can also cause water leakage.


Inspection and judgment: Usually, the method of finding the source of coolant leakage is used for inspection and judgment to identify the root cause of the leakage.


1. The radiator is leaking water. If you find that the radiator is leaking, you can remove it and use a rubber stopper to block the inlet and outlet of the radiator. Then, place the entire radiator in water and use an air pump to blow air into the radiator from the drain pipe. The area where the bubbles appear is the leak. Mark with a stylus or colored pencil, then remove the radiator and dry it before welding.


2. The water pump is leaking. If there is water leakage at the water pump, check whether the sealing ring is twisted or deformed. If it is twisted or deformed, replace it; If the screws are loose, they should be tightened in a timely manner.


3. Cracks occur in the cylinder block, cylinder liner, and engine body. If this situation occurs, the cylinder head can be removed to search for cracks. If cracks occur in areas with low stress or low working temperature, they can be repaired by coating with plastic adhesive or by applying red lead paint around the cracks, then covering them with iron or pure copper plates and fixing them with screws.


When cracks appear in areas with low stress but high working temperatures, they can be repaired using the cover plate method or wire planting method. For areas with high stress, cold welding with pig iron welding rods can be used to repair and level them.


4. The rubber water pipe is broken. If the rubber water pipe is broken, it should be repaired or replaced with new parts in a timely manner. It is necessary to regularly check whether the clamps at the water pipe joints are tightened to prevent water leakage.


5. Poor sealing of the lower sealing ring of the cylinder liner. If the sealing ring is twisted or deformed, it should be replaced in a timely manner. After installation, paint around the sealing ring.
