The Reasons for The Popularity of Generator Usage

May. 15, 2024

Generators are very useful equipment. How do you decide which type and size is suitable for you? According to your usage, there are four different styles to choose from. All generators convert alternative fuels such as propane, natural gas, gasoline, and diesel into electricity. This allows for the use of appliances, charging batteries, or any other activities that require electricity during power outages or in areas without electricity. Having a generator is a bit like owning your own small power plant.

The four available generators include portable, backup, power output (PTO), and recreational vehicle (RV). Each has a different size and output, so choose the one that best meets your overall needs.

There are three different types of generators, including entertainment, emergency, and professional. The entertainment generator is very suitable for camping and occasional use, using gasoline with a power of 1000-3000 watts. Emergency generators are very suitable for household and sporadic use, using natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, or natural gas, with a power of 3000-17500 watts. Generally speaking, professional generators are the ideal choice for workplaces and daily use, using gasoline or diesel with a power of 3000-15000 watts.

The size of the backup generator is much larger and permanently installed outside the home or residence where it will be used. It is connected to the natural gas or propane pipeline of the building, which will run the engine inside the generator. There are three styles of generators of this type. Home backup is only suitable for residential use, with a 7-20 kW air-cooled engine that operates on natural gas or low pressure, and comes with bundled switches. The whole house generator is for residential use and may be commercial, 22-48 kW, liquid cooled, operated on natural gas or low pressure, with switches sold separately. Commercial generators are only used for commercial purposes, 22-150kW, liquid cooled, using natural gas, low pressure, or diesel. This switch is sold separately.

The power output generator is basically a fancy AC generator, often used in tractors. They are very suitable for use on farms and ranches. When selecting this type of generator, take the following steps: select engine power. Match the PTO generator with the horsepower of the tractor. Please remember that you need 2 horsepower to generate 1 kilowatt of electricity (a 50 horsepower engine is needed to generate 25 kilowatts of electricity). Next, select the engine speed (RPM). The common speed of the power output shaft is 540 or 1000 revolutions per second. Newer tractors typically travel at two speeds, while older tractors may only be able to travel at one speed. Finally, select the electrical phase. The PTO generator generates two types of electricity, single-phase or three-phase. Single phase power comes from the wall socket, while 208 or 480 volts require three phases. By following the above steps, you will find the perfect generator that meets your needs.

The RV generator is installed in a compartment outside the vehicle and can use existing gas or propane tanks. These generators are small, compact, or medium-sized and can do simple tasks such as running small equipment, as well as complex tasks such as cooling the entire RV. The wattage ranges from 2kW to 10+kW, depending on the source of fuel used.

No wonder the use of generators is so widespread. It's much easier to figure out everything you want to run a generator on, the power level of the generator, and then decide which one to buy.
