Water Cooling Principle of Cummins Diesel Generator Set

Today, we will briefly introduce the water cooling principle of Cummins diesel generator set.


The cooling water jacket is cast in the cylinder head and cylinder block of the diesel engine. After being pressurized by the water pump, the coolant enters the cylinder water jacket through the water distribution pipe. The coolant absorbs the heat of the cylinder wall while flowing. The temperature rises, and then flows into the cylinder head water jacket. The coolant enters the radiator through the water pipe through the thermostat and radiator. At the same time, due to the rotation and suction of the fan, the air is blown through the radiator core. The heat of the coolant flowing through the radiator core is continuously dispersed to the atmosphere and the temperature is reduced.

Finally, it is pressurized by the water pump and then flows into the cylinder water jacket again, so that the diesel engine speed increases. In order to make the front and rear cylinders of the multi-cylinder diesel engine cool evenly, generally the diesel engine is equipped with a water distribution pipe or a cast water distribution chamber in the cylinder block. The water distribution pipe is a metal pipe. The larger the water outlet along the longitudinal thermal sense is from the water pump, the closer the cooling intensity of the front and rear cylinders will be, and the cooling of the whole machine will be uniform.


The water cooling system is also equipped with a water temperature sensor and a water temperature gauge. The water temperature sensor is installed at the outlet pipe of the cylinder head to transmit the water temperature of the outlet pipe to the water temperature gauge. The operator can know the working condition of the cooling system at any time with the help of the water temperature gauge. The normal working water temperature is generally 80-90 ℃.


The coolant used by the diesel engine should be clean soft water. If hard water is used, the minerals in it will precipitate at high temperature and form scale in the pipes, water jackets and radiator cores, which reduces the heat dissipation capacity, easily overheats the diesel engine, and also blocks the radiator core, accelerates the wear of the pump impeller and pump casing.


For hard water with more minerals, it can be added into the cooling system only after softening treatment. The common method for softening hard water is to add 0.5-1.5g of sodium carbonate or 0.5-0.8g of sodium hydroxide into 1L of water. After the generated impurities are precipitated, take the above clean water and inject it into the cooling system.
