What is an AC generator on a diesel generator?
An AC generator is a generator that converts rotating mechanical energy into electrical energy. This type of electricity is used to power schools, homes, hospitals, factories, telecommunications base stations, and many other applications. Diesel generators can be used as main power, main power (PRP), emergency power, backup power (ESP), or limited time power (LTP).
What is an AC generator?
Electrical steel and copper windings are mainly made of the following materials, and the outer frame is usually made of low-carbon steel. Due to the forces acting on the AC generator during the rotation of the diesel engine, the frame of the AC generator must be sufficiently rigid to resist these forces throughout its lifespan (possibly for decades). Copper windings and electrical steel require insulation to prevent short circuits to ground or other windings.
How does an AC generator perform its work?
AC generators on diesel generators are generally brushless self-excited. This instruction only applies to this type of AC generator.
The rotating machinery provided by diesel engines can be used to rotate the main rotor of AC generators. This rotor has a magnetic field that generates AC current in the main stator of the generator. By changing the working current to control the magnetic field, the working voltage of the main stator is controlled, and the excitation system AC generator provides working current to the main rotor. The main stator is usually connected to the generator terminals by cables.
The exciter stator, exciter rotor, and main rotor are composed of the following parts. The working voltage and current of the generator terminals are monitored by the exciter stator. When the exciter rotor rotates, the exciter stator induces a working current in the exciter rotor. The working current from the exciter rotor is then rectified by the rectifier diode. Then, with the help of the main rotor, a magnetic field is generated to induce AC current in the main stator.
When the working voltage of the main stator needs to increase, AVR increases the working voltage of the exciter stator. When the working voltage of the main stator needs to be reduced, AVR reduces the working voltage of the exciter stator. You can read what happens when the AC generator is loaded.
