In modern large power plants, multiple diesel generator sets are generally used for parallel operation. There are three main reasons.
① Make the unit operate under the most economical condition. When hydropower stations and thermal power stations operate in parallel, the power generation and supply can be adjusted uniformly to achieve the purpose of economic operation. In case of abundant water, hydropower stations can generate a large amount of cheap electricity, while thermal power stations can generate less or no electricity to save fuel. If it is in the dry season, the thermal power plant can generate more power to meet the needs, and the hydraulic power generation can carry a small amount of variable load, or operate as a condenser to supply reactive power of the grid and improve the power factor of the grid. Parallel bank can also adjust the number of units put into operation according to the change of load size, so that the generator is close to full load or full load operation, thus improving the operation efficiency.
② Improve the reliability of power supply. When multiple generator units operate in parallel, any failure or maintenance of one unit will cause power failure, and the capacity of the standby unit can also be appropriately reduced, and the regular maintenance of the unit can also be uniformly arranged.
③ Improve the quality of power supply. When the units are connected in parallel with the power grid, a strong power grid can be formed to reduce the disturbance effect of load changes on voltage and frequency, and keep it within the specified range, so as to improve the quality of power supply.
In the communication power station, several diesel generator sets are generally equipped, which can operate alone or in parallel according to the power supply needs. In order to ensure uninterrupted communication, parallel operation is more necessary when the power station is not allowed to interrupt power supply.
From the perspective of the electromagnetic relationship of the generator itself, the parallel operation of the generator is no different from the single operation, but the operating conditions are completely different. During single machine operation, after the load is connected, it must be borne by this generator. The frequency of the generator is determined by the prime mover (such as diesel engine) that operates this generator. The terminal voltage of the generator is determined by the excitation current of the generator, the frequency of the prime mover and the load size. In parallel operation, the load is shared by two (or more) generator units operating in parallel.
