Tips for Diesel Generating Sets Battery Maintenance

Aug. 03, 2023

Tips for diesel generator battery maintenance as follow.

When the battery of the diesel generator set has not been used for a long time, it needs to be properly charged before use to ensure the normal operating capacity of the battery. The normal operation and charging process of the technician will cause part of the water in the battery to evaporate; Therefore, it is necessary to refill the battery of the unit from time to time. The first step before refilling is to clean the dirt around the filling port to prevent the dirt from falling off. Put it into the battery compartment, then open the filling port and add an appropriate amount of distilled water or pure water. Do not overfill it. Otherwise, the electrolyte inside the diesel engine will overflow from the filling port when the battery is discharged/charged. Pores gushing out, causing corrosion damage to surrounding objects and the environment.

Diesel generating set is a kind of power equipment that uses diesel engine as prime mover to drive generator to generate electricity. This is a kind of power generation equipment with quick start, convenient operation and maintenance, low investment and strong environmental habit performance. Avoid starting the unit at low temperature. The battery capacity will not be able to output normally in low temperature environment, and long-term discharge may cause battery failure. The battery of the backup Cummins diesel generator set should be maintained and charged regularly, and a float charger can be equipped.

Tips for diesel generator battery maintenance:

1. Check if the battery is charged properly. If you have a three-way meter, after starting the engine, measure the voltage of the two poles of the battery, it must be more than 13V to be considered normal. If you find that the charging voltage is too low, you need to ask a professional to overhaul the charging system. If there is no three-way meter, you can use the visual method: after the engine is started, open the battery cap and see if there are bubbles around each small grid. The normal situation is that there are bubbles coming out of the water continuously, and the more you refuel, the more it will bubble; if you find that there is no bubbles, it is likely that there is a problem with the charging system. Special attention is that hydrogen will be produced during this inspection, so there must be no open flame during the inspection to avoid the danger of explosion and fire.

2. Open the battery water cap to see if the water level is in the normal position. Generally, there will be upper and lower limit markings on the side of the battery for your reference. If it is found that the water level is lower than the subscript line, distilled water must be added. If distilled water is not available at once, you can use filtered tap water for emergency. Do not add too much water, the standard is to add to the center of the upper and lower marks.

3. Wipe the outside of the diesel genset battery with a damp cloth, and wipe clean the dust, oil, white powder, etc. on the panel and pile head, which are easy to form leakage dirt. In this way, the battery is often wiped, and the pile head of the battery will not accumulate white acid-etched powder, and its service life will be longer.
